Introduction to Digital Video and Audio

Course Description

This course is aimed at those who need to know a little about the technical world of video and audio, but do not consider themselves 'technical'. It is a course which introduces digital technology, explores the digital standards we all work to and looks at the techniques, processes and terminologies which are so important to the production process. It aims to explain why we need to work with very high quality systems and what might go wrong if we don't. It introduces the basic concepts of compression as a form of data reduction and looks at the principles of intra and inter frame codecs and which you should choose.

Duration: 1 day

Course Outcomes.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of sampling and quantisation.
  • Calculate a simple data rate and work out file sizes.
  • Understand the importance of using an appropriate sample rate.
  • Understand the significance of larger bit depths.
  • Appreciate the importance of error correction and concealment.
  • Be able to identify and select the correct digital audio and video standards.
  • Understand some basic principles of compression and appreciate the concept of concatenation.

Prior Knowledge

This is a beginners guide to working effectively in the digital world. It is aimed at those who want to understand the benefits of the digital world, which standard or codec to use and when, but who may not want to get into complex technical detail.

Course Outline

The topics covered will include:

  • The advantages of working with digital signals
  • Sampling and quantisation
  • How we choose data rates.
  • Audio and video standards and their uses.
  • AES Digital audio.
  • Rec 601 and 709 digital video.
  • Video sampling structures.
